Residential Group Specialty Classes

Residential students are required to attend and actively participate in the following Group Specialty Classes:  Art, Physically Active Education, Diversity Coalition, Green Project Initiative, Real life Skills, and New Language. Each Group Specialty Class is worth one credit.

Art Class includes:  Film-Making, digital editing, web design, dance, theater, photography, music, painting, sculpting, drawing, poetry, etc.

Physically Active Education includes: Morning workouts at the YMCA, hiking, rowing, yoga, surfing, rock climbing, guided meditation, team sports, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing, etc.

Diversity Coalition involves:  Monthly cultural theme projects, student-facilitated activities, discussions, and community-based projects

The Green Project Initiative involves:  Learning about alternative energies and environmentally-conscious gardening methods and techniques, preparing feasts with an organic chef, assisting with community fundraising and global awareness activities, implementing permaculture design plans and more.

Real Life Skills includes:, Culinary instruction, household and vehicle maintenance, financial management, a variety of guest speakers/teachers, volunteer service projects, sex education, substance abuse counseling and awareness in conjunction with Project Success, and serving as mentors for elementary students in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rockland, Parenting workshops

New Language includes: Becoming proficient in American Sign Language

In addition, residential students are expected to meet with one-to-one advisors on a weekly basis to discuss, review, and manage personalized Post-Graduation and Self-Care Plans as part of their academic requirements.
